Bartoli’s Triumphant Return to the Paris Stage

After an absence of more than 20 years, Cecilia Bartoli this week made a triumphant return to the Paris stage, stunning audiences and critics alike as Desdemona in Rossini’s rarely seen opera Otello at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.

According to Christian Merlin, writing in Le Figaro, opera-lovers in the French capital who have long waited to see Bartoli back on stage “have now had our prayers answered a hundredfold, for she is phenomenal”.

Reprising a role she first sang in Zurich two years ago, in this same 1960s-set staging by Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser, Bartoli is praised for putting “her superhuman technique entirely at the service of the text” and for embodying what the reviewer calls “virtuosity as the expression of feeling – the very essence of bel canto”. As the critic says, “hats off” to La Bartoli!
