I am proud and grateful for the fact that together with a magnificent team we have an opportunity to present a new vision of Bellini’s Norma here in Salzburg. The work appears in an entirely new light thanks to the exceptional musical guise in which it is being staged here in performances based on the new critical edition of the score and with an orchestra that plays on period instruments. For my own part, I have found in the eponymous heroine the role I have long been dreaming of: here is a figure who, torn apart by inner conflict, is dramatic through and through. For me, Norma is one of the truly great love stories.

The tremendous success of yesterday’s first night has demonstrated to all of us that we are on the right course. I hope that you will join us on our voyage of discovery and derive just as much enjoyment from the other events that form part of the 2013 Salzburg Whitsun Festival, which takes as its starting point the theme of “Opfer – Victim/Sacrifice”.

In this complete studio recording of a newly prepared critical edition - the first on period instruments - Giovanni Antonini and Cecilia Bartoli reveal Norma’s authentic pre-Romantic roots and return to Bellini’s original conception. The role of Norma was written for Giuditta Pasta, who sang what today’s listeners would consider to be mezzo-soprano roles, while Adalgisa was conceived for a light, silvery soprano. With Cecilia Bartoli and Sumi Jo heard here for the first time on record together, this iconic opera has been restored as Bellini originally intended.

“Mission” brings Cecilia the Swiss Award for Culture 2012

“Swiss Awards” is the most important national award in Switzerland which is given every year to outstanding personalities who excelled in courage, innovation, creativity or originality. It is awarded by a jury in 5 categories. In addition, one of the nominees is voted “Swiss Person of the Year” by TV audiences.

For her project “Mission” Cecilia was presented with the “Swiss Award in Culture 2012” during a grand gala in Zurich. “Mission” was incidently created in Lugano with a Swiss conductor – Diego Fasolis – and a Swiss orchestra and choir – I Barocchisti and the choir of RSI.

Prize winners in other categories that night included Jakob Kellenberger, recently retired President of the ICRC, and Bineta Diop, female rights activist and founder of “Femmes Africa Solidarité”, considered by Time Magazine to be one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

ITALIAN: “Mission” porta Cecilia verso il “Swiss Award Cultura 2012”

Il “Swiss Award Cultura 2012” è stato rimesso a Cecilia sabato scorso durante una grande serata di gala al Hallenstadion di Zurigo per il suo proggetto “Mission”. Infatti, “Mission” è nato a Lugano col direttore ticinese Diego Fasolis e i suoi gruppi “I Barocchisti” e il “Coro della Radiotelevisione svizzera”.

Altri vincitori di questo premio prestigiosissimo nazionale di quest’anno sono stati Jakob Kellenberger, l’ex-presidente del CICR, il fondista Dario Cologna, l’ex-consigliere federale Adolf Ogi e Bineta Diop, femminista e fondatrice della FAS (“Femmes Africa Solidarité”) – secondo Time Magazine una delle 100 persone più autorevoli nel mondo.

To end this eventful year, Cecilia will return to the Berlin Philharmonic Hall.

On New Year’s Eve, at 17.25 the concert will be televised live on German TV channel ARD and screened in more than a 100 cinemas all over Germany, the Czech Republic, France, Ireland, Luxemburg, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

Accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle Cecilia will sing three arias by Händel.

Cecilia opens La Scala 12/13 season

Tonight, Cecilia returns to the Teatro alla Scala in Milan to take up an invitation from the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala and its Music Director Daniel Barenboim. This gala concert is the opening of their concert season and together, they will perform works by Handel, Mozart and Rossini.

On 30 November at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden (Germany), Cecilia was awarded the renowned Herbert-von-Karajan-Music-Prize during a festive ceremony which followed a sparkling speech by author and journalist Dirk Schümer. The prize money will mostly be donated to the International Opera Studio in Zurich, one of the most important educational institutions for young opera singers in the world.

Cecilia has been closely affiliated with the Zurich Opera House and the alumni of its opera studio from practically the beginning of her own international career. Herbert von Karajan, on the other hand, was one of the first conductors to discover her at a very young age. And finally, in 2012, she followed in his footsteps as Artistic Director of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival, a festival Karajan founded 40 years ago.

Previous prize-winners include Daniel Barenboim, Thomas Quasthoff, John Neumeier, Alfred Brendel, Evgeny Kissin and Anne-Sophie Mutter, amongst others.

Leichte Töne bei Stefan Raab und den Heavytones

Am 21. November war Cecilia erstmals bei Stefan Raab im TV Total zu Gast, wo sie ihr Projekt „Mission“ vorstellte und eine Arie von Agostino Steffani mit der virtuos improvisierenden und swingenden Kultband „Heavytones“ singen durfte. Der „Liebe auf den ersten Blick“ zwischen ihr und den Musikern der Band entsprang die spontane Einladung für eine Zugabe im Anschluss an Cecilias Konzert in der Kölner Philharmonie…

Und am nächsten Abend erfolgte dann unter grossem Jubel des Publikums und Standing Ovations das Debüt der Heavytones in der Philharmonie, wodurch die neue musikalische Freundschaft endgültig festgeschmiedet wurde.
