Agostino Steffani - though born in Italy - lived in Germany for most of his life. He may be called the "grandfather" of Handel and at the same time a connector between Renaissance and Baroque. His contribution to the operatic genre in northern Germany is comparable with Lully´s influence in France or Purcell´s in England. As a diplomat (and a spy?) in politics and church policy he travelled regularly around Europe and covered about 45.000 km during his lifetime.
Until mid-June Cecilia Bartoli is on tour in Germany and will visit some of the cities where Steffani lived more than three hundred years ago.Back to News »
