Just a few months ago Cecilia Bartoli´s contract as Artistic Director of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival has been extended to 2021. For this year she has chosen the motto “Thus I will call upon all gods”.
Gluck´s opera Iphigénie en Tauride, directed by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier, is the central work of this year´s edition of the Festival. Diego Fasolis conducts I Barocchisti and the cast is completed with Christopher Maltman, Topi Lehtipuu, Michael Kraus und Rebeca Olvera.
Cecilia Bartoli comments on the question how Gluck’s opera fits into her overall programmatic concept: I try to imbue my series at the Whitsun Festival with its own inner logic. From the beginning, it was a core concern for me that great – in many ways mythic or heroic – female figures could be the central focus, especially since for the first time a woman was heading the festival as its artistic director. In the series of programmed operas of recent years, you also see a sequence of atmospheric contrasts. To put it in terms of Italian opera: opera semiseria, tragedia lirica, and commedia. And now we also have a classical tragédie-opéra, as loved by the French, with Iphigénie as the central figure – to me, the moment seemed right for that.
